history: Yuri Hyuga was born in Japan to Ben Hyuga, a Colonel in the Japanese army and his wife, a Russian woman named Anne. Ben was a powerful Harmonixer, someone who can use Fusion to join with spirits and demons to gain incredible power. When Yuri was a young boy, his family moved to the Chinese Mainland. Yuri's father was on a mission to keep an eye on Dehuai, an incredibly powerful Adept and user of Taoist magic. He found out that Dehuai was planning on performing a Demon's Gate Invocation, which was a ritual that, if performed, would literally turn Japan upside down, not to mention that it would have untold consequences on the world. Ben had worked hard to stop Dehuai from using the Demon's Gate, but even though he had stopped him, it came at the cost of his own life.

Unfortunately, Dehuai was still alive. Knowing that his son would become just as powerful, Dehuai sent demons after Yuri. He and his mother were attacked at their home, and Anne was killed during the attack, while young Yuri survived thanks to his own Harmonixer skills awakening. He had then sworn revenge toward Dehuai and worked on training and honing his abilities.

Flash forward to 1914. A strange voice has started speaking to Yuri, guiding him to a Trans-Siberian Express train. On board this train is the Japanese Army, who are holding a girl with immense spiritual power. This girl's name is Alice Elliot. The voice tells Yuri to rescue Alice. However, he is not alone in wishing to get Alice. A British gentleman with tremendous magical power is also after the girl for his own evil plans. Even though this man slaughters every single soldier on board the train, Yuri manages to hold him off and secure Alice. Yuri and Alice eventually fall in love and stop both Dehuai and this man's schemes to reshape the world. The man, Albert Simon, had made contract with the demon god Amon, and was actually attempting to stop Sapientes Gladio and Gregori Rasputin from trying to take over the world. However, the ritual went awry, and Yuri was forced to kill him, although he doesn't know about Simon's true intentions until Covenant.

Although he had saved the world, unfortunately, things didn't turn out happy for everyone afterward. Alice had died under the influence of the Four-Mask Curse, taking Yuri's place as a result. She died on the way back from China, causing Yuri to go into a deeply depressed state. He stops in Domremy, France, where he buried Alice with his own two hands (according to Geppetto when he spoke with Karin) and decided to stay and protect the village.

One year later, World War I breaks out. Yuri is more determined than ever to protect Donremy, especially from the invading German army. One fateful day, Yuri meets Karin Koenig and Nicolai Conrad. This day changes his life forever.

Nicolai strikes him with the Holy Mistletoe, cursing him and diminishing his powers. He leaves Domremy along with Karin, Geppeto, and Blanca, hoping to regain his abilities and fight off the new evils infecting the world, which are all connected with the rising Malice that is present in the world.

Before Yuri and Karin went inside Yuri's own soul in order to unseal Amon, the party finds out the true origins and intentions of the original Sapientes Gladio before the cult had split into two different factions. Once Yuri and Karin finish the ritual, which involved going inside Yuri's soul and defeating Amon in combat to prove that Yuri had fully earned the right to fuse with Amon, the party rushes back to Petrograd to prevent Rasputin from killing Anastasia's father, Tsar Nicolas. Because Rasputin made a soul pact with the demon Asmodeus, Yuri was forced to unseal Amon, who had been residing in his soul after the defeat of Albert Simon in the original Shadow Hearts. The group was moving through a secret set of passageways underground that led to the Romanov's Winter Palace, since Rasputin tricked the Tsarina into thinking that Yuri and his friends had brainwashed Anastasia into the attempted murder of her little brother, Alexei. The incident forced them to take an alternate route.

Once Rasputin was found out, he eventually fled, forcing Yuri, Anastasia, and the rest of the party to follow him outside, where he had raised an expansive floating fortress. The party fought their way through and confronted Rasputin again, this time, Yuri took him on alone, fusing with Amon and moving the God of Wrath so much that he stopped trying to fully possess Yuri's body. He then fights and defeats Rasputin, only to find out that Nicolai had fused with the third of the Demon Gods, Asteroth. The party also finds out shortly afterward that he is trying to open a door in the same tower where the Holy Mistletoe was stored that contained vast amounts of Malice. The party quickly heads to Italy and reach the tower just as Nicolai was about to open the door, fighting him as he fuses with Asteroth, defeating him. However, even so, he still opens the door and releases large amounts of Malice upon the world, causing the war to escalate in brutality. However, before Yuri and crew are able to capture Nicolai, the Japanese Envoy Kato takes him and places him in Japanese custody, fleeing with him back to the island nation.

Of course, Yuri and party follow, despite the fact that Yuri's condition is getting worse because of the Mistletoe lingering in his body.

personality: To be honest, Yuri's kind of a jerk. Well...at first, anyway. He's somewhat stoic and tries to distance himself at first, but with Alice's death, his ruder traits were tempered somewhat. He usually means well, even if things don't always turn out the best at first. He also seems to have somewhat of a soft spot for children, as seen by his interactions with Jeanne and Anastasia in Covenant. However, he also has a somewhat snarky side that has a bad habit of coming out when not necessary, making things a bit difficult at times for the others.

However, he genuinely seems to care about the fate of the world, and wants to help stop it while trying to find a way to get rid of the Holy Mistletoe that's slowly trying to kill him. He's somewhat reckless, but he is almost always good with his intentions. He has a fairly decent temper, though, and if confronted with someone he doesn't like (like Nicolai), he will not only smartass, but knowing him, he'll punch first and ask questions later. He has a bad habit of not looking before he leaps. In other words, the guy's fairly impulsive.

Emotionally, Yuri's fairly strong, especially with having gone through the situations he has so far. He will fight as much as he can in order to prevent something from happening, especially where Alice is concerned. He's strong-willed and doesn't like giving up, even when the situation seems dire. He also holds a strong belief that peoples' lives in the here and now are more important. This is shown again and again when he confronts the different villains in the series, most of whom have the same type of excuse for what they are trying to do: reshape the world as they see fit, ending pain and sorrow in the process. He honestly really and truly cares for others: he easily could have killed the soldiers back in Domremy while fused as Amon, but decided not to because that is against his moral beliefs.

Yuri's emotional weaknesses revolve around the women he cares about especially. Despite the fact that he tries to keep them out of his personal battles, especially with Nicolai, Rasputin, and other enemies, they always seem to become central to what is going on around him. Plus he's, as I said, somewhat of a sucker for kids. If he sees a child in danger, he'll do whatever he can to save them, even if it means that he must reveal his powers.

abilities/powers: Yuri has the ability to use Fusions, fuse his soul with that of various demons of different elements. However, this is different from possessions. Yuri augments the abilities of the demon that he has chosen, as well as switching his appearance to better suit the demon in particular, but he still retains his sense of self and isn't completely taken over by it. This comes from years of training and experience. He prefers to fight with his hands when he's not performing a Fusion, using various clawed gauntlets as his weapon of choice.

Yuri's strongest Fusion is the God of Wrath, Amon, which resides in his soul after defeating it in the first Shadow Hearts game. Once unlocked, it is primarily used (plot-wise) to fight against the other two Demon Gods, Astaroth and Asmodeus.

With the implantation of the Holy Mistletoe, Yuri's Fusion abilities have been cut down significantly. As of this point in the canon, he can only access up to Level 2 fusions of every element and Amon. And despite the fact that he can use the abilities of his Fusions to augment his natural abilities, that's only in the time when he's actually in the Fusion form. Yuri cannot perform magic or have enhanced abilities in his normal state.

first person sample: Previous post in dealing with killer rabbits and accidentally showing people his abilities as a Harmonixer. :'| Whoops.

third person sample: It had been ... he wasn't even sure anymore, the memories seemed to all merge and meld together in his subconscious. But there was one thing that was definitely apparent from it all - he still missed her. To be honest, Yuri wasn't sure what he wanted to do anymore outside of protecting the village. It's what she would've wanted.

He still had urges to leave, go exploring like he used to, but, he always felt guilty for thinking that.

He never would admit it, especially to the old man, but - he felt lost, without a purpose or means. But it wasn't until disaster struck that he realized that he needed to leave – after all, the main reason why here was an attack there in the first place was because of him taking on the incoming soldiers and certain bastards finding out about his Harmonixing abilities...

He looked back to the village, shutting his eyes with a small huff. Seemed that fate had other plans for him after all.

"Yuri!"

Blood-red eyes snapped open at Karin's voice, and he nodded as he turned to her, the old man, and Blanca, moving along the path. Hey, if they were going to get any answers, there was no point in beating a dead horse by this point.
